I’m still processing how much joy this week held, in the company of like-minded yet singularly original songwriters and musicians. Every time I’ve been to Folk Alliance, there’s a different air, new energy, and of course a young, fresh crop hungry to learn and grow.

This year I brought along two of my favorites from @berkleenyc, @helenahallbergmusic and @alexaxford, and they absolutely crushed it.

5 years ago today, Lucky Strike was released and slowly started to change my life. Things I started learning around that time include:

-songs from honest places trump everything
-you can produce your own records
-the best-written songs will indeed be the ones that people want to hear years later
-a small budget is not a non-starter
-practicing really does matter
-friendships that support your growth go a very long way

Happy birthday to my one and only Holly Lowman, who makes even the oxygen around herself more compelling to breathe in. She travels from place to place with a yearning for connection, excitement, joy, humor. The heart she gives to every part of her life, to every person in her life, should earn her some kind of medal. I feel immensely lucky to know her, love her, be in this world with her.
